The Security Industry Authority (SIA) is the UK government body responsible for regulating the private security industry. Any individual carrying out licensable security work in the UK must hold a valid SIA licence.

What Does an SIA Licence Cover?

SIA licences are issued for specific activities. The most relevant for keyholding and alarm response are:

Door Supervisor licence: Required for door supervisors and security guards

Security Guard licence: Required for static guarding and keyholding operatives

Close Protection licence: Required for personal protection operatives

For keyholding and alarm response, operatives must hold a valid Security Guard or Door Supervisor licence.

How to Verify an SIA Licence

You can verify any SIA licence on the SIA's public register at sia.homeoffice.gov.uk. Simply enter the licence number to confirm it is valid and current.

Always ask your security provider to confirm the licence numbers of operatives attending your premises. A reputable provider will have no hesitation in providing this information.

Why It Matters for Your Insurance

Many commercial insurance policies require that security services are provided by SIA-licensed operatives. If an incident occurs and your provider cannot demonstrate that licensed operatives were used, your insurer may refuse to pay out.

Keysure employs only SIA-licensed operatives and provides licence verification on request. Every attendance report includes the operative's licence number for your records.
